Spiritualism and the Paranormal
Paranormal research has been around for over a century. Most people in other
countries are much less skeptical and much more accepting of the paranormal than
people in the United States.
Modern Spiritualism began with the investigation of paranormal activity in the home
rented by the Fox family in Hydesville, New York on March 31, 1848. The family
seemed to live at peace during the day, but at night, they were kept awake by
knocks and noises. One night the girls named the knocking "Mr. Splitfoot" and
devised a system of knocks for this spirit to communicate with them - knocks
meaning "yes" and "no" and to designate letters of the alphabet. Through this
system, they found out that this spirit being had been a traveling salesman who was
murdered in the house and buried in the basement. His remains were later found
where he indicated.
This began the rise of Modern Spiritualism and the acceptance of mediumship in
the United States as we know it today. Spirit communication is not a new
phenomena. Our religion is called "Modern Spiritualism" because spirit
communication became a subject of scientific research in the United States in 1848
with the experience of the Fox family. Spirit communication has been with the
human race since the beginning of time and has been documented in sacred spiritual
texts throughout the ages.
The manner in which spirit manifests has not changed. The manner in which we can
detect this manifestation has greatly changed. Tape recorders pick up EVP
(electronic voice phenomena) or spirit voice, cameras of all types catch ectoplasm
and orbs on film. Mediums are no longer tied to chairs to prove they are not faking
physical phenomena. Mediums now appear on TV and radio and give messages
regularly in Spiritualist churches and other places.
Psychic Science Spiritualist Church has mediums who give messages at our regular
Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday services.
As Spiritualists, we continue to investigate the presence of spirit beings. We have
had ghost hunts during which spirit communication through pictures and voice
phenomena are evident. We also assist those who are in spirit to pass to the light
which most often calms the manifestation of spirit entities within a dwelling.
